{"id":71,"date":"2018-05-22T19:55:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-22T19:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cherylrostek.com\/index.php\/2018\/05\/22\/the-fire-storm\/"},"modified":"2018-05-22T19:55:00","modified_gmt":"2018-05-22T19:55:00","slug":"the-fire-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cherylrostek.com\/index.php\/2018\/05\/22\/the-fire-storm\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fire Storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">Before you begin reading, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/stephen.l.norman.5\/videos\/10155696303943517\/?t=13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Watch this video<\/a>.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; (Thank you so much to the incredible fire-fighters!!)<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">What you see is a building and a water bomber and a plume of ominous smoke.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">What I see is our beloved camp severely threatened by forest fire.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The fire is pressing in, pushing closer.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>It is massive and powerful and uncontained.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;Those buildings it threatens to obliterate are more than buildings- they are a dream realized by the camp\u2019s founders, their establishment birthed over 60 years ago.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Those buildings are witness to some of my husband\u2019s most cherished childhood memories.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Indeed, it was also Oshkidee which cemented Ryan and mine\u2019s relationship.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>It was here we experienced our mutual joy of camp and of waterskiing.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>We did crazy teenage, rule-breaking stuff (Shhh, don\u2019t tell&#8212;\u2026and my children I wince in dread and fear that I did these things and hope that you are smarter than us and thank God for His protection).<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>We had fun and we sought God and it was good, it was so good!<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>I sat in chapel, my first days at <st1:place><st1:placetype>Camp<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placename>Oshkidee<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>, dreaming and brainstorming how a wedding here would look. <span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;<\/span>I was in love with Ryan; but, also with this beautiful camp.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>That was the summer of 2000.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The following summer at camp, 2001, Ryan and I went for a dirt bike ride down the trails (which are currently engulfed in fire).<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>We stopped at an opening that overlooks the lake and here Ryan said to me, \u201cI think we should get married.\u201d And I replied without hesitation, \u201cme too.\u201d<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Upon returning home, we shared our intention with our parents and my father-in-law booked the camp for the following June 22.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;The chalet was the perfect setting for our truly perfect day: our wedding.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;But that was just the beginning, or perhaps the middle\u2026<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;We were youth leaders at camp the following year and my in-laws rented out the camp for spectacular family time a couple times years following.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;Then we moved to BC and didn\u2019t return to camp until Ryan suggested we go when I was on Mat leave with the twins.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>I thought he was crazy (and really many elements of that week at camp were pure chaos and craziness!)<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>But there was still something special about being in that place, <st1:place><st1:placetype>Camp<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placename>Oshkidee<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>, where \u201cwe\u201d first began as a 2 person family.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>That year at camp I felt God give me a message, \u201cCheryl, I will give you years in the lake filled with joy with your kids.\u201d<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>At the time it was an encouragement to press through the crazy days of motherhood, where I wasn\u2019t able to enjoy being in the lake; but, a couple months later when I was diagnosed with brain cancer with a prognosis of one-year survival, those words, that promise of <i>years,<\/i>became a life-line of hope. <span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;<\/span>We returned the following year, last summer, and similarly, God spoke. There was one evening at camp where the moon was full and spectacular and reflected off of the lake.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>It was if God was saying, in the darkness I am the beacon of light.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>There is no darkness in me.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>I have overcome the darkness.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;We are registered for camp again this summer.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>We discussed whether to go or not, it is a long trip to get there; but, we decided yes, it is worth it.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>It is always worth it.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;A few days ago we received word that the camp is in a fire storm.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Blazes are penetrating closer and it does not look good.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>As you see how meaningful this place, this camp, is to me, to our family you can understand how this situation is an allegory of our life!<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The fire rages; flames licking into our lives, trying to consume us and it looks dismal.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The fire is powerful and raging and pressing and unrelenting.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The wall of smoke ominously threatens suffocation.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>But.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Yes, but.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>In it all our hope in God does not waver.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">The morning after imminent threat on the camp was apparent, the camp director shared this:<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pastorrick.com\/devotional\/english\/full-post\/problems-force-us-to-depend-on-god1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">View devotional here<\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #1d2129; font-family: &quot;helvetica&quot;; margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;&#8220;I<\/span><span style=\"color: #1d2129; font-family: &quot;helvetica&quot;; margin: 0px;\">f there\u2019s one thing I\u2019ve learned in life it\u2019s that God is in control&#8230;even if it doesn\u2019t appear so. As the sun comes up I haven\u2019t heard any update about the fire situation at the camp. So we eagerly await news. <\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #1d2129; font-family: &quot;helvetica&quot;; margin: 0px;\">However, I do believe I heard from God this morning! Every morning I get a devotional emailed to me from pastor Rick Warren, who\u2019s from <\/span><span style=\"color: #1d2129; font-family: &quot;helvetica&quot;; margin: 0px;\">California<\/span><span style=\"color: #1d2129; font-family: &quot;helvetica&quot;; margin: 0px;\">. It\u2019s uncanny how often it relates to what I need to hear. And today is no different. The promise that God is with us through our fiery trials. I am confident the plans He has for Oshkidee will be seen. <br \/>The picture used almost even looks like that trail to the camp! God\u2019s got this!!&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><u><span style=\"color: #000120;\"><br \/><\/span><\/u><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">Huh! God speaks.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;As I was contemplating this and the whole Camp  Oshkidee situation I was reminded of how God spoke to Moses in Exodus 3 through a burning bush.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>As Moses approaches the burning bush God says to him, \u201ctake off your sandals, the place where you are standing is holy ground.\u201d<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Immediately I was reminded how being at Camp Oshkidee, truly feels like walking on holy ground.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>God\u2019s presence is so very tangible there; it is holy ground!<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>(I\u2019ve already mentioned how God has spoken to me at Camp Oshkidee. It was surrounding the burning bush which God was speaking through that required Moses to remove his sandals.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>I thus conclude where God speaks, it is holy ground.)<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Whatever happens to our beloved camp, I know that holy ground cannot be consumed by fire!<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">We keep waiting for updates on what is going on with the forest fire and the camp.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>In the waiting I was reminded of another \u201cfire story.\u201d<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>It\u2019s the story from Daniel 3 where there are three men who refuse to worship the gold statue which the king has decreed must to worshipped when music sounds.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>At their refusal the king is enraged and gives them one more chance \u201cBut if you refuse you will be thrown immediately into the blazing furnace.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>What god will be able to rescue you from my power then?\u201d says the king.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;The men\u2019s response is striking.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;\u201cIf we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>But even if he doesn\u2019t, Your Majesty can be sure that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.\u201d<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;These words penetrated me.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>They are the words I needed for my own fire storm!<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>They are exactly the words that speak to how I feel about being cured from incurable cancer.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>I trust my God is powerful and that indeed He can heal me.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>I pray that God takes my brain and obliterates and banishes the cancer.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>I pray for those years in the lake to celebrate joy with my family!<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>But even if I am not cured physically, my soul has been healed in a brilliant fashion!<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>We can celebrate this!<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>And even if the cancer consumes me, I will worship my God for what He has done for me!<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;<\/span>Why? How?<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>I wrote the following, called \u201cLift my head\u201d I think it helps explain.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;The only way to have fulfilled life on earth is to believe that there is life beyond this earth.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>To believe the heavens hold something bigger and brighter than humanity: God Himself full of Mercy and Love, waiting to hold me in His arms and lift my head up high.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>This truth not only gives me a future beyond the grave, it gives me strength and sustaining courage to truly live while I\u2019m alive.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">Psalm 3:3<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">\u201cBut you, oh Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts my head high.\u201d<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">(Remember too, we are not in trusting in God in order to escape the flames.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>He is not our safe-guard, He is our everything!<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>We are trusting in God because we believe in <i>Him<\/i>.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>We are trusting in God as the only One worthy of complete devotion and highest honor and praise!)<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<p>The story of the three men in the fiery furnace doesn\u2019t end here.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>They are indeed pitched to burn in the flames.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>But in the furnace, they are joined by a divine being!<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>(And they walk out and are not even singed!) <\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">\u201cDidn\u2019t we tie up three men and throw them into the furnace?\u201d<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">\u201cYes..indeed!\u201d <\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;<\/span>\u201cI see four men, unbound, walking around in the fire,<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>They aren\u2019t even hurt by the flames! And the fourth looks like a divine being!\u201d<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<p>In the fire storms of life, it gets hot.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>(My friend describes the chaos of her life as a \u201chot mess.\u201d)<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>In these hot messes we are accompanied.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Do not forget the great Comforter who goes with us and the angels who protect us (Psalm 91:11).<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Do not forget that through the fire storms of life the chaff of life is burnt off.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>God baptizes us with the Holy Spirit and with fire so what remains is the most valuable parts of life (Matt <st1:time hour=\"15\" minute=\"11\">3:11<\/st1:time>-12).<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Life like God intended for us to have.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>In a society adverse to pain and hardship, this is a difficult lesson to learn.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Sometimes I don\u2019t like to admit it (because who really likes to admit that good comes from pressing through difficulty); but, this cancer journey continues to burn off the chaff of my life and polish the rich treasure in my soul.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<p>I Peter 1:7<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">\u201cThese trials are only to test your faith, to show that it is strong and pure.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>It is being tested as fire test and purifies gold \u2013 and your faith is far more precious to God than mere gold.<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span>So if your faith remains strong after being tried by fiery trial, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.\u201d<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\">Oh God I raise my hands in petition for Camp  Oshkidee and for petition for my life; but most of all I raise my hands in honor of You, to whom be the glory! Amen!<span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Update: I wrote this a few days ago, the camp is still very much threatened as the fire engulfs the area<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<p><b><\/b><i><\/i><u><\/u><sub><\/sub><sup><\/sup><strike><\/strike><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before you begin reading, Watch this video.&nbsp; (Thank you so much to the incredible fire-fighters!!)
